Common and uncommon teaching in Tai Chi Chuan
Origins of Tai Chi Chuan (Yang style):
historical (common): Yang Lu Chang (1700), Yang Chen Fu (1800)
traditional (not common): Chang Seng Feng___the crane / snake__the dream
Before the time of Yang Luchan, this art had no name and was simply an unusual martial art practiced by few; sometimes described as the thirteen techniques or positions:
- 5 steps: forward, back, look to the right, look to the left, center
13 postures
- 8 gates: ward off, rotate back, press, push, pull, split, elbow, shoulder
Cultural environment: Taoism or "Tao teaching"
the "Taoist Canon" and the three texts: TaoTeChing, LieTzu, ChuangTzu
The 5 pillars of Tai Chi Chuan: Taolu , Tui Shou, Qigong, San Shou, Zou Chan
There are five main styles of T'ai Chi Ch'uan, each named after the Chinese family from which it was born::
Chen-style di Chen Wangting (1580-1660)
Yang-style di Yang Lu-ch'an (1799-1872)
Hao-style di Wu Yu-hsiang (1812-1880)
Wu-style di Wu Ch'uan-yu (1834-1902) and his son Wu Chien-ch'uan (1870-1942)
Sun-style di Sun Lu-t'ang (1861-1932)
